Last Saturday (25th June) Millman Street Community Centre members helped Maria celebrate her 90th birthday. There was wine, food and singing, and of course a cake for the lady’s big day.
“It was good,” said David. “Loads of people came. The tables were packed.”
Norman and other members of the Mary Ward Centre Musical Group provided the entertainment.
“There was loads of nice food,” David said. “It was very good. A good party! Great crowd!”
“There were about fifty people,” Norman said. “Maria’s son, son-in-law, cousins and so on.”
Norman sang Bless ‘Em All, Kiss Me Goodnight Sgt Major, and Keep The Home Fires Burning. “There was too much food!” he grinned. “It was nice. We had a very good time.”
Maria was presented with eight bouquets of flowers, Shereen did her hair specially, and she was given L’aimant – a fancy perfume, this reporter understands. There was prosecco – a wine from Maria’s native Italy of course – for the toasts made to the birthday girl.
As for the lady herself, she attended despite her own pain due to ongoing health problems. “I’m 90!” she said. “It was very nice. I saw relatives I haven’t seen for twenty years. I got quite a few shocks [at the appearance of some relatives]!”
One cousin said that Maria’s “Eyes and smile were exactly as they’ve always been!”
Maria was full of praise for Shereen’s hairdressing, and for Ruma’s cooking. “She did a lot of work for the party. There were lovely prawns! So delicious!”
The birthday girl also sang: My Own, You belong To My Heart and All The Things You Are – “It went down very well indeed,” she said. “It was very nice. The food was excellent! No complaints anywhere. Very, very nice indeed! Between Norman, my sister and Ruma, they worked very, very hard indeed to make it as pleasant as possible!”
Everyone at HCA wishes Maria many, many more birthdays and hopes she celebrates them with her friends at Millman Street Community Centre.
