Queeny met her husband-to-be at a dance. The dance was at the barracks on Holloway Road. There’s a Waitrose there now. She was about sixteen. His name was Ernest John Mason. She was twenty when they got married in 1940 whilst he was doing his army training. Queeny didn’t see her husband  till the war ended. He was out in Singapore with the South East Asia Command.  She’d rented a flat for them but when he came home Ernest said, It’s  like a ‘rabbit’s hutch,’ and didn’t want to live there.  They moved to Grays Inn Road where Ernest used to live.
